<font>"</font>When what started as a simple project quadrupled in scope, we needed some extra help in a hurry, and couldn't afford the luxury of months of training. We engaged Nicholas from TreeFallingInTheWoods and within a short time we were expanding the application at a rapid rate. Nicholas' commitment to test-driven programming and best practices helped keep us on track and keep bugs to a minumum. We're still using test frameworks built at that time, not to mention the application code itself. Next time we're in a tight spot we'll definitely think of TreeFallingInTheWoods. <font>"</font>

Mission Statement

Mission Statement

The idea of TFW has carried with it certain values from day one. We've listed them below, in case you are interested.

To the client:

experienced engineering

transparent pricing and clear advice

practical, cost-effective solutions

flexibility and swiftness in meeting deadlines

To the programmer:

self-empowering autonomy

profit share

unintrusive workplace culture

The Name

Our name is an evocation of different meanings from the philosophical question - if a tree falls in the woods and nobody hears it, does it make a sound?

From this we take:

the role of the observer valuing everything we do

the metaphor of a particular tree, a common Computer Science ADT, amidst a multitude of other such trees, to represent working at a singular point with the information flowing through the internet

an idea of design inspired by natural objects and ecosystems

the spirit of intellectual enquiry

Commercial History

Commercial History

Previous project work includes

Q9 Software: development resources contributed to Q9's VOIP portal project, using lightweight J2EE.

Assembla: consulting and analysis of open source solution (Mephisto) to handle multi-site capabilities.

Fallshaw Production Feedback: development resources to rapidly develop an auditing application for factory floor operations, for Tricycle Developments.

URL forthcoming: design and development of a ticketing Facebook application for exchangehut.com. The project included - rapid assimilation of the Facebook API, lateral thinking when integrating SSL pathways through the FB layer, and quick Rails development.

Toigo Ready For Finance (design and development headed by Turing Studio). Rapid prototyping and development of Quiz administration, user examination, and scoring system component.

In addition, we recognize the importance of open source and contribute back or improve the frameworks we use for development. In the last twelve months we have contributed work to Mephisto, Lilu, Liquid, Breakout, and a few other projects we've probably forgotten about.

Non-Profits and Charities

We are also committed to donating time, as appropriate, to worthy non-profits and charitable institutions.

SPUNC: advice, then deployment and administration of static site.

Consulting

TFW is a small, experienced consultancy offering Rails and lightweight J2EE solutions.

We can build just about anything which has to operate on the world wide web and we offer business advice on technical strategies.

We emphasize a practical, non-hyped model of communication with customers, and employ a mixture of Agile and Extreme programming methodologies.

We favour Ruby on Rails for most web development, but come from a history of lightweight J2EE, which is appropriate in some cases.

We are based in Melbourne, Australia, but quite often run projects to a 'distributed' model across several continents, using various project planning and communication platforms (video, skype, phone). Face to face international or interstate meetings are also possible; the point is that we create the best working environment for each given customer and programming team.
